Behind the Scenes The making of the 1st Iowa Quilt Poster map by Kathy Stevens, Illustrator
Iowa was full of surprises and fun
for Gene and I.
great state and knew nothing of its treasures.
We had just finished working on the California Quilt
Poster and decided we wanted to work around the
Great Lakes area.
Little did we know that nearly all of the RV parks
were closed in the winter, luckily we found a park in
Topeka, Kansas.
This meant lots of long commuting.
Some days we left Topeka around 3:00 a.m.to make
it on time to an appointment in northern Iowa by
10:00 a.m.
We traveled with our two dogs, Kachina (dachshund
Chihuahua mix) and Hopi (dachshund) along with a
hitchhiker (dachshund) we named "Trump"
he needed a home immediately we took him with us
to visit quilt shops.
When we visited Backyard Quilts in Corydon, Iowa
Susan, the owner, was looking for a shop mascot.
All it took was
one look from Susan and the both of
them became instant buddies.
On our way to Kolona, Iowa
we saw these vehicles near the quilt shop

This quilt shop has the distinction of having a jail cell in the middle of it.
It was formerly the City Hall in Buffalo Center Iowa.
Connie Peterson, the owner purchased this building for one thousand
dollars and turned it into a quilt shop.
Visit her at Quilters Cottage113 1st St NW  Buffalo Center, Iowa

(Bring your get out of jail free card)
We enjoyed visiting The Herbert Hoover Presidential Library.

Then the shops alongside the Mississippi River were fun to visit. In the
winter there are hundreds of Eagles that nest along the river banks.

A must stop for quilters is the town of
Kalona. There are several shops
and some of their furniture.

Amana is another must see location.
This is a community that is self sustaining.
Plus the food is terrific.

Brooklyn, Iowa has a shop located inside the True Value hardware store.
Brooklyn is famous for advertising a bridge for sale, that was scheduled to
be torn down, on E-Bay.
"Brooklyn Bridge for Sale"

Pocahontas
has a large statue of the Indian maiden, Pocahontas. It is
beautiful.

Eagle Grove, Iowa has a quilt shop located in a former chicken coop that
still uses corn cobs for insulation.

Lamont has one of the Biggest Quilt shops in Iowa and it is located in
the middle of a corn field.

John Wayne's birthplace in Winterset has the famous
Fons and Porter Quilt Shop.
This area is also where you can find the
Covered bridges of Madison County.

Grundy County has
Quilt Blocks painted on the sides of Barns

Neals Sewing in Muscatine
was an educational stop as Jerry, the current
owner is a sewing machine expert and historian.

Iowa has something for everyone.

We encourage you to discover it for yourself. While you are at it...say hi to
all the shop owners for me.

Unusual Location
of a Quilt Shop
Jo Quilter in Bellvue was
where I first learned about
English Paper Piecing and
started me on my way to
making a Grandma's Flower
Garden Quilt. I am now
finishing my second quilt. Jo
introduced me to hand quilting
which has since become my
passion.
Jo Quilter has starter kits available for less than
$10 and you will be quilting in less than ten
minutes. This is the perfect kit and project to do
while traveling as it is so portable and fun.  Call Jo
for your starter kit.  563-872-3473
